Makaton is a language programme that uses signs and symbols to help people to communicate. It is based on British Sign Language and is designed to support spoken language with signs and symbols used alongside speech and in spoken word order. As a charity, we provide two tiers of fully accredited Makaton training that parents and professionals are able to access to better understand Makaton and how it supports their child with DS:
- Beginner levels 1-4
- Advanced Levels 5-8
Both these courses are accredited and are delivered by one of our 3 qualified Makaton trainers. The courses are module-based and delegates will need to attend all modules in order to qualify and to receive full accreditation.
PLEASE NOTE: DELEGATES WISHING TO ATTEND THE 5 – 8 MODULES MUST HAVE COMPLETED LEVELS 1-4.
In addition to the above we also offer the following two informal, non-accredited, ‘taster’ sessions both of which are provided free of charge:
- Makaton Christmas signs – an evening session lasting approximately two hours and will teach some wonderfully festive signs and songs
- Makaton taster – this is a 2 hour “in setting” course delivered by one of the charity’s 3 qualified Makaton Trainers. The course will teach approximately 50 signs.
All courses will normally take place in our training room at CDSSG HQ
There are no Makaton courses currently planned, but please do check back regularly for updates to our schedule.
